Assignment #2 Lesson Plan Rationale
Sticking with a pure Constructivists plan, I have decided to use this website as the launch point for my student activity.
It is based on a writing activity in the Intermediate grades (specifically Grade 5) with the topic being, What is Descriptive Writing?
I won't assume that students will have access to an iPad in their schools, but I will be using some of the apps found on the iPad together with the web 2.0 tools found online. Both the online tools and apps are accessible by using the iPad, however only the online tools can be accessed using any other device that can get on the Internet.
This lesson is meant to be worked on both collaboratively and individually. Collaboration will take place in the initial stages of the lesson: the understanding of what is descriptive writing and the brainstorming of the writing topic. The individual portion will be the blog posts and the final writing assignment.
The lesson is scheduled for about a period and a half or about an hour. Most elementary schools have 7 periods throughout an entire day. Ideally this lesson would be scheduled for the first two periods in the morning or the two directly after recess. This would allow students to continue working without fear of running out of time and be able to use any of the mobile devices without disruption. Also having the time back to back would allow a teacher to reserve the iPads if necessary. It is important that students be able to utilize the time in their collaborative groups to access the brainstorming apps and email them to the instructor and themselves in the allotted time. During the rest if the time, students will be working on their rough draft of their writing. The final copy will be due a week after the initial brainstorming sessions.
